The Effect of Medical Marijuana on Suicide Rates

As you may know, marijuana has the ability to treat a plethora of different symptoms and diseases. Symptoms like depression and chronic pain, are two of the most common causes of suicide. In this article, we’ll be discussing the effect of medical marijuana on suicide rates.

Common Causes of Suicide

Suicide is one of those things that is difficult for many people to understand. It’s hard to put yourself in the shoes of someone that has once contemplated it. There have been many explanations given, but 2 stick out as the most prominent.

Depression is the leading cause of suicide. Often times, the person who is suffering has tried many different outlets, to no avail. Suicide is seen as the last option for relief. One of the most important things that you must understand, no matter how difficult life may be, is that there is ALWAYS another way. Marijuana relieves depression, by boosting mood and positivity. It is most definitely worth a try, if you are experiencing these feelings.

Chronic pain has also led to many suicides. Much like depression, people experiencing chronic pain see no other way out. Marijuana has the ability to relieve this pain as well, by interacting with the receptors in the brain. Opioids are often prescribed to treat chronic pain even though they produce a slew of negative side effects. Medical marijuana on the other hand, relieves pain but does not produce the same negative side effects.

Studies

Several studies conducted over the last few years have shown the effect of medical marijuana on suicide rates.

One study concluded that, 3 years after the marijuana laws were passed, the suicide rate for men in their 20’s and 30’s decreased by 10%.

States with access to medical marijuana have also seen a 25% drop in opiate overdose deaths as well as alcohol related deaths.

While these numbers may seem small, they are actually quite significant. If marijuana can save just one life, wouldn’t that be worth it?

Access to Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana has proven itself to be a viable treatment option for these symptoms, and many others at that. This miracle drug has saved lives, and will continue to save more in the future as medical marijuana becomes more accessible.
