Fight Antibiotic Resistance with Cannabis

Over the last few decades, the issue of antibiotic resistant bacteria has gone from concerning to downright scary. This is due to both over prescribing by doctors, and overuse by patients. While many people believe that taking antibiotics (even when they don’t need to) will benefit them, it actually just speeds up the rate of resistance. Furthermore, research into the development of new antibiotics has stalled. Luckily, research suggests that we may be able to fight antibiotic resistance with cannabis!

“Major Global Threat”

In 2016, the World Health Organization director, Dr. Margaret Chan stated the antimicrobial resistance is becoming a “major global threat.” The rate of infection and number of deaths seems to increase each year.

Fight Antibiotic Resistance with Cannabis

Cannabis contains antibiotic properties in several of its non-psychoactive cannabinoids (medicinal components). Back in the 1950’s, Sativa strains showed promising signs as an antiseptic, but scientists were unable to figure out exactly which components were responsible for helping.

Fortunately, recent studies have been extremely promising, however, researchers aren’t quite sure why cannabinoid antibiotics work. They’re also not sure how reliable they’d be, long-term.

CBD as an Antibiotic

This non-psychoactive cannabinoid has proven itself to be effective in treating 2, quite unusual strains of MRSA. This has caused scientists to further examine how cannabis antibiotics work. They also believe that they may work in the body differently than traditional antibiotics.

CBG, CBN, and CBC as an Antibiotic

Researchers claim that cannabinoid antibiotics will be more effective if they are made up of strictly non-psychoactive components. CBG, CBN, and CBC all carry antibacterial potential. Scientists may be able to develop an all-encompassing cannabis-based antibiotic from whole plant hemp extracts.

Potential of THC as an Antibiotic?

THC was dismissed in the past, however recent research has found that it is effective in treating staphylococcus and streptococcus. Additionally, whole plant sativa oil effectively combatted the E Coli bacteria.

The fact that we very well may be able to fight antibiotic resistance with cannabis is extremely promising. As research continues, we have a feeling that the results will get even better!
