How Medical Marijuana May Benefit Senior Citizens and Older Americans in Florida

According to a survey by the Washington Post, as reported by the D.C.-based National Council for Aging Care, when asked about the benefits of medical cannabis, 90 percent of respondents reported positive results, with more than 2,300 of those being senior citizens. With a total of 7500 people questioned, seniors made up the largest group in the study by far.

Moreover, as the Council for Aging Care reported, senior cannabis use rose by 250 percent between 2006 to 2013. Those numbers are, quite frankly, astounding.

In fact, poll after poll supports the data that more and more senior citizens are exploring their options when it comes to medical cannabis. For example, over the past 15 years, older Americans approval ratings of the plant have jumped over 15 points, from 29 percent in 2005 to 45 percent today.

Anecdotally, seniors who use medical cannabis are found to be less apprehensive over the treatment, once they begin to realize all of its actual benefits.

As noted in our FAQ section, seniors seek out medical cannabis for a variety of reasons, from pain and discomfort to more common ailments related to aging such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. As research shows, cannabis is a natural anti-inflammatory which may provide older patients with a way to avoid having to take so many prescription drugs.

A Possible Alternative to Harmful, Expensive Prescription Medication

For many seniors, cannabis is more cost effective and safer than prescription drugs, especially for anyone who uses pain medication. And seniors know better than anyone, as they take more than 33 percent of all prescription medications on the market today.

At $3,000 per year, medical marijuana is quickly becoming the go-to alternative.

The numbers back this data up as well, as one study recently revealed that states with medical cannabis programs had a drop in the cost of prescriptions for Medicare patients.

And with numbers like that, older patients are turning to medical cannabis in droves.

“People in their 80s and 90s, even retired Air Force colonels, are finding such relief” with cannabis, one older woman told the New York Times. “Almost everybody I know is using it in one form or another, she continued.” According to the Times, that even included her husband.

The woman herself, a 66-year-old retiree smokes a little cannabis every night to help relax as well as to help with a few other issues. “I think relaxing is healthy for you.”
